            A shake is pretty  much a simple wooden shingle made from split logs. Shakes have historically been used primarily for roofing and siding applications around the world. High grade shakes are generally used for roofing applications, while the lower grades are typically used for siding. In either situation, a properly installed shake roofing system will provide long-lasting weather protection.   As you can see, shake has a notable rustic aesthetic to it, and they will require more maintenance than some other more modern weatherproofing systems.

            The term shake has been thought of as being  synonymous  for all wood shingles.  The key difference is that shake is split from wood logs, and wooden shingles are cut to a particular shape or thickness with a saw.   Traditionally,  "shake" refers to the board in which the shingle is nailed to, not the shingle itself. Split wooden shingles commonly referred to as  shag shingles.
