            Steep slope roof is anything that has a pitch that is greater than 3:12.    This means that for every 12 inches of horizontal measurement, the rise will be 3 inches or more for it to be considered steep slope.    Typically once we have a steep slope roof, we will  have extra safety requirements as a precaution against slips, trips, and falls.

            Materials suitable for steep slope roofing include asphalt shingles (3-Dimensional or 3-Tab), asphalt roll roofing,  wood shakes,  concrete and clay tiles, slate and metal roofs. Additionally, some of the modified bituminous roofing as well as certain adhered single-ply membranes and SPF foam can be used in certain steep slope roofing applications.

When is a steep slope system beneficial?            Steep slope roofing materials offer aesthetically pleasing styles and colors, as well as drainage.

Common Steep Slope Installations            Asphalt shingles, metal roofing, concrete tiles, wood shakes.   The most common steep slope roofing types are asphalt shingles.   The most durable of the asphalt shingles is 3-Dimensional or Architectural  Asphalt shingles.   They're made up  of fibrous glass mats (similar to fiberglass composition) saturated with asphalt.     Asphalt is easily degraded by UV exposure, so extra precaution is used in the process by embedding various colored granules into the exposed side of the asphalt shingle that it has a distinguishable color to the shingle.

            Wood shakes,  concrete tiles, and clay tiles are most often associated with residential construction, but can be used for steep slope commercial roofing as well. Concrete or clay tiles can be installed in overlapping "shingle fashion" on steep slope roofs. They're typically  installed with a combination of nails and mortar mix to add strength and durability.

            Metal roofing can be used in virtually and roof slope environment or condition. Metal roofing systems have gained popularity because of their heat resistance, longevity and color customization options.
