             Slate Shingles are also referred to as  slate tiles. Slate roof shingles are among the more expensive roofing systems to install, but can last between 80 and 400 years depending on the maintenance and quality of the slate used. The material itself does not deteriorate, which makes it fantastic as a roofing medium.   It can also be recycled from one building to another.   When a  slate roof is beginning to fail, it's usually when an individual slates loses its peg attachment, and begins to slide out of place. This can open up small gaps above each neighboring slate.   Sometimes the slates themselves begin to break up. The lower parts of a slate may break loose, giving a gap below a slate. More common is the small area above the nail hole that gets fatigued  and fails, allowing the slate to slip.   A less common situation is when it cracks entirely in half, and the bottom portion slides off the roof all together. A common repair to slate roofs is to apply torching.  Torching is  a mortar fillet beneath the slates, attaching them to the battens. This technique may be applied as either a repair to hold slipping slates, or done in the initial construction phase.

            Slates are particularly heavy and the roof may begin to split apart along the roof line. Rotting may develop and weaken the internal timbers.   This can be accelerated if there is not adequate ventilation in the attic portion of the roof.  An important factor to installation of slate roofs, is the use of a metal flashing which will last comparable to the length of the slates themselves. Slate shingles may be cut in a variety of decorative patterns and are available in multiple colors.

            Flagstone shingles are a more traditional roofing material. Some of these shingles are fastened in place, but some are simply held by gravity (so the roof pitch can not be steep). Sandstone has also been used to make shingles.
